Noticing these signs? You probably need new windows

Are you thinking about updating your windows, but not sure if it's really necessary?
In some cases, you may be able to hold onto old windows. However, if you're experiencing serious issues with their structure or efficiency, it's a time to update to a new model because its most likely costing you money!
We've noticed a dramatic increase in people replacing windows recently and we would like to let you know of our free service. If you want window quotes from installers based in the UK in your area use our website here and we'll find you the best quotes possible free of charge!
Check out these clear signs that it's time to replace your windows.

You Can Feel Draught in Your Home

Obvious, but means more than you think. Even the highest quality windows will allow a slight amount of air enter, but it should never be something you can feel or notice, your comfort shouldn't suffer!
Why? Because your windows will wear out over time and let more air in/out, resulting in you feeling a bit cold. For example, wooden windows can become warped from exposure to moisture in the air resulting in making the window too tight to function properly in some places, while creating gaps in other areas.
Also, another indication would be when the corners of the sashes and frames become loose and create gaps that allow air to penetrate the window
And while your first instinct may be to apply weather stripping, it's good to note that noticeable drafts often indicate an air leak caused by more than missing or damaged weather stripping. In fact, sealing and weather stripping should not be considered as anything more than just a temporary fix and should not be relied upon to perform properly.
The only solution to fixing these drafts is to replace your windows entirely. Trust me, it's worth doing it otherwise you're just going to pump wasted heat out the house, might as well just throw your money out the window!

You Have Some Difficulty Operating Your Windows (Shutting/Opening)

Again this is obvious, but people do tend to ignore this like it is no big deal! The windows that are most effected tend to be the bigger models. This is especially true for older double hung and single hung windows, which have issues with balance. When the balance fails, the window will no longer remain up when opened and can slam shut, posing a potential hazard.
Also be aware that wood and metal windows can also experience similar operating failures, if not properly cared for they can rot or rust so look after your windows like it's your baby!

There's Condensation Inside the Glass of Double- or Triple-Paned Windows

If you have double or triple-paned windows and notice condensation or fog inside the glass, you might need to replace the glass or the entire window!

Why? Because condensation and fog between the glass panels can indicate seal failure. When the seal fails, moisture is able to enter the space between the panes of glass and as a result, air will condense on the glass. And when this happens, the insulated glass is no longer doing its job.
TOP TIP: Condensation in between the panes of glass will leave a white film which is caused by calcium deposited on the glass. If you see this white film, even if there is no visible condensation, it's a safe bet that the insulated glass unit has failed.

Your Electric/Gas Bill is Expensive

If your heating and cooling costs are high, it's likely that you have an inefficient furnace, or old windows that are simply not energy efficient, to keep your home at your desired temperature.
So, should you replace your windows?
According to Energy UK, "If your home has old and/or inefficient windows, it would  be more cost-effective to replace them than to try to improve their energy efficiency. New, energy-efficient windows eventually pay for themselves through lower heating and cooling costs, and sometimes even lighting costs."

We've noticed a dramatic increase in people replacing windows recently and we would like to let you know of our free service. If you want window quotes from installers based in the UK in your area use our website here and we'll find you the best quotes possible free of charge!

New Window Quoter - faster and easier to use

Our online quote website developers have been busy re-designing and improving the WindowQuoter website, which delivers instant online quotes without the need for a double glazing salesman to call you.

Their hard work has really paid off for homeowners, as the all new WindowQuoter finally went live this weekend.

New features include updated regional double glazing prices and a quicker, easier to use quote mechanism.

New WindowQuoter - easier than ever before to use - try it today..

Breaks in the dry spells remind us how draughty our windows really are

When a long dry spell comes to its usual abrupt end, several things happen.

1) - The lawns suddenly turn green and grow a few inches overnight
2) - Hose pipe bans aren't lifted
3) - The wind rattling the rain against the windows makes you realise just how draughty they are.

Yes, like many others i'm sure, we sat there shivering at the weekend, determined not to put the heating on, and at least look like we were enjoying the summer in shorts and t-shirts.

Many homeowners don't think of getting a quote for replacing things like windows until the nights start to draw in and even contemplating a journey from the bedroom to the bathroom involves several layers lest frostbite sets in.

But that's just plain wrong when you think about it logically. Here's why:

1) Having new windows and doors fitted in the Summer means less chance of disruption due to the weather.
2) Fitting them in the Summer means you won't mind so much the wide open spaces where your old window and door used to be, as the company start fitting the new ones.
3) Summer discounts are generally better as Window Companies look to secure orders and keep their fitting teams employed during what is traditionally a quieter few months.
4) Any remedial decorating that's required (very often, nothing at all needs to be done) has a chance to dry thoroughly.
5) If you're having a conservatory, then the hopefully dry weather will make digging the base foundations much smoother and quicker, and certainly less messier.
6) You can start making energy savings right away, rather than wasting a few months.
7) With the window companies being quieter, you'll have more choice of fitting dates and a generally quicker turn-around time from ordering to fitting.

Of course waiting can have one advantage - the ability to save up for the replacement windows before they're fitted if you're not one for low rate finance deals currently available etc.

Either way, doing it now or waiting a while, you'll going to want to know how much your windows are going to cost you now, so that there are no nasty surprises if you do get a reputable local company round to measure up and provide a written quotation later on.

Using Window Quoter not only lets you type in your own measurements and select the style and number of openers you'd ideally like before giving you an online price, there and then. You can also make free use of our 'local matching service' which finds you up to 3 local companies, read other homeowner comments about those businesses and get your online quote confirmed in writing.

Using our online or matching services won't cost you a penny but it could save you pounds.

Celebrations as the WindowQuoter website passes 10 years old

The original WindowQuoter has done sterling work. Ten years ago when everybody else said online pricing for double glazing wasn't possible, Price Engines developed WindowQuoter.

Ten years later and still nobody does it better. We serve over 3,500 homeowners online every week, and go on to help many of them get their online quote confirmed in writing by our approved network of double glazing companies, many of whom have been with us since launch.

We've added our own deposit protection scheme, introduced home owner feedback to directly monitor companies and expanded our network of approved home improvement companies to some 6,500+ and even introduced secure data collection - exactly the same as your online bank uses.

But if we're honest, the on-screen format was a little tired looking - so many tick boxes and choices to select from. 10 years ago, the world-wide-web, home internet connection speeds and your average home computer's capabilities were so very different from now.

That's why we've just finished the all new WindowQuoter website design, making it sleeker and easier than ever to get an instant online quote for windows, doors, conservatories and porches in upvc, hardwood or even aluminium.

Enter a few location details about yourself and we'll use our online technology to give you a quote based on your requirements and the national prices where you live. You can still select the style of window or conservatory, how many openers you want, type of material, colour of upvc etc and get an instant online quote there and then.

New WindowQuoter - like old WindowQuoter - only better, faster and now more secure than ever. Click here and be one of the first to try new WindowQuoter.

Remember - the WindowQuoter website provides the first step to re-assurance by giving you an online guide price for the work you want doing. You'll also get the opportunity to view first-hand feedback from other homeowners who've used companies local to you, to help you decide whether they're the right company for you and your home.

Which Double Glazing company would you choose?

The following examples are real comments left by homeowners just this week.

"Came out - said they would send a quote now 2 weeks + later still no quote or contact"

"I was very pleased with everything from the initial visit to the fitting of my windows, fascia boards & door"

The Home Improvement Quotes Network can help by giving you access to 10's of 1000's of direct homeowner comments on the companies near you. We're the only online quoting service to give you an instant quote based on real UK industry prices where you live, and offer you the opportunity to see first hand previous homeowner feedback, before you even let a company into your home.

Double glazing can make a real difference to your home's appearance, your quality and comfort of life, not to mention your energy bills so it pays to make sure you're choosing the right local company for your home - even before you approach a company for a quote.

But it's not always obvious which companies in Ripley can be trusted and which will waste your time and potentially, money too.

Triple Glazing - Worth the Money?

free online quotes for double glazing from Window Quoter

Triple glazing is more prevalent in places like Scandinavia than in the UK due to the colder climate – although with the weather we’ve had recently maybe that’s in for a change!

Triple glazing is, as the name suggests, where the glass within a window frame is made up of 3 rather than 2 panes of glass. The extra glass/space layer does increase the insulation of your home whilst also reducing its solar gain in the Summer, which means that in terms of heat and energy efficiency, triple glazing will always out-perform double glazing.

But is it worth the additional cost? Prices for triple glazing can be anywhere between 20 and 40% higher than double glazing for the same window.

Get instant, free online quotes for glazing from Window Quoter.

The last few weeks excepted, typical UK weather wouldn’t normally warrant the extra cost unless you live in the very far north – but there are still significant benefits which make triple glazing worth considering. These include lower fuel costs and lower carbon usage, which can actually go some way towards paying the difference in price between double and triple glazed installations – particularly if your house has large expanses of windows.

The value of triple glazing also hugely increases if you home is next to a busy road or you live in an area of high noise levels, such as near an airport, then the additional sound insulation you get with triple glazing may well be worth it.

Triple glazing in such circumstances can increase your property's value and may give your property the edge over similar properties in the same street should you need to place it on the market.

Also, if you’re planning a large expanse of glass ‘walling’, then choosing the triple glaze option may make life more comfortable all year round.

You may find it harder to find a supplier of triple glazing than double glazing but it’s always worth asking, especially if you think your circumstances really make triple glazing the best option. You can use Window Quoter to get free online quotes for all kinds of glazing, in minutes.

£1000 Or More Towards Your Double Glazing

Government Grants For Glazing?

A new campaign gathering momentum online calls upon the government to provide a grant for energy saving double glazing installations. Whilst current grants exist to cover installation of cavity wall insulation and other energy saving measures, this is unsuitable for many homes and some people are left unable to claim any money for improving their energy efficiency.

If your home is not adequately insulated, you could be bleeding money through your walls every single month. As your heating system struggles to provide warmth to your home, your walls may be leaking it out again just as quickly.

Replacing single glazed windows with double glazed units with an energy saving rating of ‘C’ or higher can have a dramatic effect on your fuel consumption and reduce your energy bills dramatically. Double glazing also has benefits in reducing noise and improving safety and security.

The government’s ‘Warm Front’ scheme offers a grant to enable people to install cavity wall insulation, loft insulation and other energy-saving measures. Whilst this is very welcome and helps thousands of people stay efficient, not every home has cavities in its walls suitable for fitting cavity wall insulation. Many people end up being unable to take advantage of the available grants and unable to insulate their properties.

And so, many people get left behind, unable to insulate their homes and unable to get grants to improve the energy efficiency of the building they live in.

That’s why a campaign has begun to ask the government to make a grant available to people who are unable to insulate their homes with cavity wall insulation and wish to install double glazing. On the Number 10 Downing Street website, the petition reads:

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to make available a grant to purchase Double Glazing enabling those house holders who do not have cavity walls to improve the energy efficiency of their homes and cut energy bills

If the campaign is successful, homeowners could potentially receive grants in excess of £1000 to carry out double glazing projects and improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

To get an instant, online quote for double glazing and discover how much you might expect to pay to re-glaze your house, use WindowQuoter.co.uk, part of the Home Improvement Quotes family of Quoter websites.

Save The Glazing, Save the World

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC to you and me) is a man-made plastic used in creating thousands of products, from packaging to clothing to building materials. uPVC is widely used in the double glazing industry, as it is strong, stable, and easy and cheap to manufacture.

In recent times, however, uPVC has been on the receiving end of a lot of criticism, with hardwood alternatives being promoted as more environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing.

But is all as it seems? New studies are finding that PVCu can be just as environmentally friendly as hardwood when used in double glazing – in some cases even more so.

You can get free quotes for all types of double glazed, windows doors and conservatories from WindowQuoter.co.uk

BPF’s PVCaware.org committee chairman Jon Skinner says “PVC’s environmental credentials are well proven, but as yet, they are little known, in part because the majority of the tests are relatively new. Equally, few people are aware how recyclable PVC-U is. The double benefit is that it has environmental advantages and is affordable.”

The reason for these green credentials is threefold: firstly, wooden frames require new paint or protective coating every five years or so, and although there are some paint brands who have improved their environmental credentials recently, many paints still contain environmentally damaging chemicals.

PVCu is also more energy efficient than other framing materials, and over the lifetime of the windows can be a net carbon benefit to your home thanks to its greater ability to retain heat.

Thirdly, PVCu is extremely recyclable and reusable. Not only raw plastics can be recycled, entire PVC products can be broken down and recycled to almost original build quality after they’ve reached the end of their life span. They can go through this process up to 10 times (paper can only be recycled 6 times), which means PVC products can have a full lifespan of hundreds of years.

PVCu is not the last word in window frames – hardwood still has the unbeatable looks, for instance, and with proper care can last just as long as their plastic counterparts. Whether you’re willing to pay a little bit more to have hardwood comes down very much to personal preference and priorities. More and more information seems to be emerging, however, to suggest that hardwood and PVC are better matched on environmental terms than most of us have been lead to believe.

And remember, you can get a free, instant online quote for PVCu or Hardwood windows and doors from WindowQuoter.co.uk

Reasons to replace your uPVC double glazing

Believe it or not, a sizeable chunk of the double glazing market is for replacement replacement windows and doors. Although PVC windows have a considerably longer lifespan than the softwood windows they may have replaced, their life isn’t infinite and do need replacement eventually.

But it’s not all about wearing out. There are quite a few other reasons why people replace replacement windows and doors – and quite often well before their sell-by date has arrived:

Looks:

If your uPVC windows have been in place for 3,4,5 years or more , it’s almost certain that the frame manufacturer has updated its profile to add more curves and more stylish joins. Woodgrain effect windows are now virtually indistinguishable from real wood from only a few paces.

Although it’s usually possible to find and replace loose and wobbly or tarnished and scratched handles, it isn’t alway possible – and the latest window furniture is also available with virtually indestructible finishes. uPVC frames become scratched over the years and as they do – they become even harder to clean and pick up dirt easier.

It’s even possible that your old windows have developed an interesting shade of pink or yellow over the years? This isn’t uncommon and it’s something that can only be cured by tearing them out and starting again.

Security:

Once upon a time the majority of window systems were designed with the glass sealed units installed and removed from the outside – what the industry calls ‘externally glazed’. In the early days of uPVC these systems weren’t as secure as they are nowadays, and there are more and more systems being sold with internal glazing.

Locks and bolts are a completely different proposition now to those fitted 10 years ago also. Ask your supplier about the “Secured by Design” standards and special locks that will withstand the most common forcing techniques.

Economy:

New and ever-changing energy efficiency targets being placed upon window manufacturers mean that modern uPVC windows are likely to be much more energy efficient than older designs. Fuel isn’t cheap and replacing windows might seem like an expensive option, but it could be one that would pay for itself sooner than you think. Triple glazing and ‘designer-gas’ filled units are now available that weren’t a few years back.

As you can see there are numerous reasons to replace your old double glazing - and you can get a free, instant online quote for all your double glazing needs from WindowQuoter.co.uk

Double Glazing enquiries soar as Winter chills creep in

Double Glazing enquiries soar as Winter chills creep in.

Everywhere you look there is evidence of Winter's approach – from piles of golden leaves covering the streets and pavements to the shorter days and the need for thicker coats when venturing outside.

Home owners will also be feeling the effects of dropping temperatures and darker nights as heating thermostats creep up, and mental notes are made to shop for thicker curtains.

Of course, with the advancements in Upvc windows and doors, and new glass technologies that reflect heat and cold out, we can all enjoy warmer homes without extortionate fuel bills.

And now is the perfect time to enjoy some pre-Christmas offers coupled with the modern excellent window and door frames designs now on offer.

Modern Upvc double glazed windows and doors have come a long way. Many feature multi-compartment frames which help trap warm air and add to the all round insulation properties of the unit. Steel re-inforcement has made warping a thing of the past and modern composites mean discolouration went out with the Ark.

Extra features like locking handles, both ways opening and tilt n'turn styles, which make it easier to clean your windows from the inside are now readily available. Perhaps you need a window that will double as a fire escape? No problem.

And Owners of period properties can also enjoy the benefits of Upvc with quality sash style frames carefully designed to blend in with existing character features.

When Henry Ford said “Any colour – as long as it's black”, he could have been referring to windows (in the literal sense). White is no longer the only colour on the street. Until recently, you may have been offered Oak or Cherry even but now even that choice has been extended as modern materials mean a greater choice.
It's also made it possible for many Double Glazing companies to offer a combination of colours – perhaps oak on the outside but white on the inside would suit you better?

The Industry itself seems to have gone through a transformation as well with pushy, doorstep tactics (whilst still used by some) on the decline as window companies focus on customer care as a priority, and realise that a customer treated properly, will come back for other work later – conservatories, roofing and fascia etc.

WindowQuoter was set up to offer home owners the opportunity to get instant on line price guides for their double glazing requirements. You can enter your own window measurements, select the style of window – bay or bow, number and position of openers etc and receive an expectation of price there and then all from the comfort of your own home without the need for a salesman to call.

Later, we'll call you and just confirm that you were able to get your online quote. As part of our online service, we can then offer you the opportunity to get up to 3 written quotations for the work you want doing that will be valid for 6 months and come from approved, local to you, companies on our registered database of over 600 companies covering the UK.

It's a completely free service to you – the home owner – and you can be assured of receiving written quotations without any selling pressure as the companies we select will know that other companies will also be offering quotations. This means you get no inflated price tactics etc.

It's a service we've been offering to home owners for the last 7 years (we are industry leaders in providing online quotations) and we can now say that practically someone on every street in the UK has used our service.

If you avail yourself of our free service, then we'll email you details of your own secure login area so you can verify which companies we've passed your details onto. You can leave feedback on your experiences with that company and if you decide to accept one of the quotations from one of our recommended companies, then you can print off your own pre-filled deposit protection certificate. Another completely free service from WindowQuoter.
