Warning to put energy efficiency first


The UK's got to start putting energy efficiency at the top of it's home improvements list if it's to meet its target of having 80% of housing stock ready by 2050.

The comments made by the Director of the National Home Improvement Council - Andrew Leech - were made as he asked home improvement retailers and installers to encourage the public to have energy saving and efficiency in mind when they planned home improvements.

In particular, he singled out new kitchens and bathrooms as areas where more could be done. Energy efficiency measures would "pay dividends in the long run".

In addition to opting for energy efficient appliances, he also recommended that more homeowners should be looking at solar and other renewable energy sources.

His comments came after it was revealed that the UK had failed to meet its 2010 renewables target - a story we reported on last week.

Energy (and fuel bill) savings can be made all around the home but the chief energy user - heating - can be reduced with a mixture of insulation incorporating the latest double glazing advances and for older properties without a cavity wall, homeowners should consider interior or exterior wall insulation.

Even owners of newer homes should be checking their loft space for the current correct level of insulation.

Extra lagging of hot water apparatus and lowering thermostats by even 1 degree can still make enormous savings without affecting your families comfort. If you're replacing your heating boiler, it's the ideal time to use the most fuel efficient model you can afford or even opt for changing to a combo boiler which only heats the water as you use it.

Energy efficiency is the first step to lower fuel bills.


In the second part of this weeks look at saving money on your energy bills, we explore what part energy efficiency plays in that process, particularly if you're thinking of installing solar panels on your home...

Getting a cheaper energy supplier is only half the story in the homeowners battle with rising energy prices. If you're not careful, any savings you make can soon be wiped out needlessly due to poor insulation or heating management.

If you're getting a solar panel installation, then an energy survey (which some solar panel companies offer free as part of their discounts) will help pinpoint the areas in your daily life where energy usage savings are possible.

Why is this important? If you're thinking of generating meaningful amounts of energy to supply all your needs, then the less you have to generate, the cheaper the overall installation will be as you won't be paying for generating capacity you don't need. This can mean a saving of several thousands on a solar panel system.

In addition to the everyday energy saving methods - plugging draughts, switching off lights, fitting energy saving lightbulbs, insulating lofts and water tanks, by carefully re-evaluating your lifestyle and energy usage, it may be possible to make a real difference to your typical energy bills.

For example, we know turning down the heating thermostat by 1 degree can make a difference but why stop there? Turning it down by 2 degrees and wearing a light sweater around the home will make twice the difference. Consider using a shower more and your bath less. And if you're on an Economy 7 type tariff (where you pay less for night time electricity but more for daytime) then think about timing washing machines, tumble driers, dishwashers and immersion tank heaters to only come on during cheap rate hours.

Green Deal

Many homeowners are now keen to hear exactly how the Government's new Green Deal system will work - the idea is that private businesses will pay into a 'green fund' which will pay for energy saving home improvements like wall and loft insulation etc. The premise that's been outlined so far is that the 'improvement' must pay for itself in expected energy savings. Whilst the homeowner will have a more comfortable and energy efficient home, their energy bills won't reduce. The savings they would have made go back to the private investors but the installation work is effectively free for the qualifying homeowner.

There is hope the measures will include certain double glazing aspects, but it will probably ultimately depend on whether the installation costs can be repaid with energy savings within the scheme's a specified time frame.

Why are upvc windows so energy efficient?


With energy bills ever-increasing, we're being forced to think smarter and more long term about making our homes as energy efficient as possible. One of the best ways of achieving that is to get a quote for replacing your old windows. But what makes upvc windows so energy efficient?

A upvc window is made up of a upvc frame and double (or even triple) glazed panels, which are inserted into the frame. Both components add to the overall energy efficiency of the complete window.

Modern frames are a very engineered piece of the energy efficiency puzzle. They're designed to place as many barriers between the cold outside air and the warm interior air as possible, lessening the cooling effect of outside temperatures and the heat loss through the frame. Look through a cross-section and you'll see multiple chambers that create barriers and air pockets.

Each frame manufacturer will claim their frame is the most efficient, when in reality, your choice may be limited to what frame manufacturer your preferred window company uses. If the company make their own frames (and many do), then it will depend on the manufactured plastic extrusion design - the raw lengths from which window frames are made.

The frame also deals with the insulation and draught proofing around opening panels.

The second component is the glazing itself.

Most upvc windows achieve a 'C' energy efficiency rating (think energy ratings similar to electrical appliances) although by choosing the right glazing option, it is possible to specify an 'A' rated window.

To achieve this, you'll want to think about specifying glass that goes beyond the normal twin glazed sealed unit. You'll need to think about gas filled cavities and glass coatings which reflect cold but absorb warmth.

If you live in a particularly noisy environment, then you may want to consider triple glazing. That's 3 panes of glass with a cavity between each pane.

New energy efficient boilers are not enough


An Aberdeen journal has reminded readers contemplating fitting a new energy efficient boiler to ensure they don't waste the savings they're making.

47% of the UK's energy use is spent on heating - that's more than they spend in Sweden (whose temperatures are generally a lot lower than our own).

It warns that to maximise the energy efficiency of a new boiler, it's imperative that homeowners also invest in double glazing.

"if you are spending money to change the heating, it is advisable to ensure that you have double glazing to keep the heat in" the paper reported.

It also warned residents who have oil fired heating systems to make sure their storage tanks are secure following the theft of 1,000 litres from one unlucky resident in October.

If you're securing your fuel tank, then it's worth checking your tank for signs of leakage - a family member lost litres of oil when their tank developed a leak. The company who supplied and fitted the new 'plastic' tank were able to syphon off the fuel in their old metal tank (which had rusted through at the bottom) and deposit it into their new tank when it was connected, saving valuable litres of oil that they'd already paid for.

Victorian home to undergo energy efficiency improvements experiment

A typical Victorian terraced property is to be the subject of an ambitious series of home improvements in an effort to raise its current energy performance rating of F to a B rated property.

This type of housing makes up a large proportion of the UK's housing stock and if the UK is to achieve it's carbon reduction targets, then it's vital that older properties are made more fuel efficient.

The 'experiment' will see 5 different types of window installed on the property including triple and double glazing.

Other measures planned for the 'makeover' include fitting a new boiler, wall insulation, water saving devices and air source heat pumps.

Other properties on the same street will be fitted with a range of conventional and innovative products, new or coming to the market soon, before the whole project is evaluated on individual effectiveness of one measure over another.

The Government hopes the practical lessons gained from making this one house more energy efficient can be used to transform other properties.

The 'test' home will be opened to the public, once it's complete, to help homeowners learn what energy saving measures they can take themselves.

Did you turn back all the clocks?


There's always one clock or watch that doesn't get adjusted when the clocks go back - have you checked all yours are up to date?

The obvious ones like central heating timers, video recorders (remember those?), alarm clocks and cooker clocks you've probably done already.

But others you may still be getting around to include: Immersion heater timers, towel rails and oil filled radiators etc on individual timers, Washing machine socket timers - especially if they're timed to take advantage of Economy 7 tariffs, Security lights...And of course the clocks in cars.

Over half of homeowners are using less energy compared to last year.


A survey by the Energy Saving Trust has revealed that 55% of homeowners are using less energy compared to a year ago.

42% of homeowners were also willing to pay more to retrofit energy saving measures to make their homes more energy efficient.

The Trust claims that households could save a collective £2 billion a year just by installing loft and cavity wall insulation and replacing light bulbs with energy saving bulbs. Add to these measures the simple task of turning household appliances like TV's, stereos and washing machines off standby would also cut nearly ten million tonnes of CO2.

Although the take-up of actual renewable energy generation has been slow to get going - something market analysts have blamed on the recent uncertainty over the future of renewable funding schemes like the FiT's and Renewable Heat Incentives - now their future has been confirmed, the figures could improve dramatically as more and more homes install renewable electric and heat generation devices like solar panels to their homes.

The report comes on the back of an energy survey by uSwitch which showed that present energy bills are proving difficult to manage for 20% of all households. As many as 61% when asked were concerned about the size of their energy bills this winter, whilst 72% said their energy cost awareness had improved since last winters cold spell.

Turning down room thermostats, water tank heat settings and adjusting individual radiators, even by a few degrees, can lower your energy usage and fuel bills.

What is a feed-in tariff and how do you make money from it?

There's been lots of media attention on Feed-in tariffs recently - the ability to make money from solar panels on the roof of your home etc but what is a Feed-in tariff and how exactly do you earn money from it?

Feed-in Tariffs is a scheme that pays qualifying homeowners and businesses for the electricity they generate via solar panels, wind turbines, hydroelectricity and anaerobic digestion, although solar energy is currently the most popular type of installation.

Payback is in 3 parts: The Generation tariff is a set rate (set by the Government) paid by your energy supplier for each unit of electricity you generate, the Export tariff is a payment you receive for each unit you export back to the National Grid, that you don't personally need/use yourself, and finally, the savings you'll make on your normal energy bills through not having to 'buy' as much energy as you did previously.

The Generation tariff changes (after the first two years) each year for new entrants to the scheme, however, once you're in, you'll enjoy the same rate for the length of the FiT's scheme. (Currently 25 years for solar installations, 20 years for others). Current rates are between 29.3p and 41.3p per kWh

The Export tariff is currently set at 3p per kWh (unit of electricity) and is the same for all technologies.

Making your home more energy efficient through improvements, insulation and energy rated appliances etc will all help lessen your overall energy usage, making the savings even greater on your daily energy bills.

Using the example given by the Energy Saving Trust, a 'typical' 2.2 kWp solar installation could earn:
£770 per year from the Generation Tariff
£30 per year from the Export Tariff
£120 per year reduction in your current electricity bills.

That's £920 per year on average.
This will depend on your location, the amount of daylight / orientation of panels to the sun etc. and how efficient your home is in its everyday energy use.

It should be noted that only those systems installed from the 1st April 2010 using an Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certified installer will qualify. If you installed generating technology between 15th July 2009 and 31st March 2010 and transferred to the FiT's before the 1st April 2010, then you'll also qualify. Tariff income for household customers using the energy for their own use is also free from Income Tax.

The Government is being repeatedly appealed to, to include micro-generators that fall outside the scheme's dates but so far have not yielded.

The FiT's cover installations up to an installation size of 5 mega-watts. Your MCS installer will be able to help you complete the claiming process once your system is installed.

So if you've got money in the bank that, at todays rates, won't be making an awful lot, then perhaps you should consider a solar panel or other micro-generation installation. Whilst tariff rates are high, and with the certainty that energy bills will only get more expensive.

It should also be noted that, whilst the Government is committed to the present tariff levels till 2012, there are numerous rumours that the Generation tariff is going to be reviewed this October (2010) and the micro-generation industry believe a cut in the rate is likely to be announced.

There is currently no scheme for hot water generating technologies, however a decision is expected soon on the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme which would cover hot water renewable technologies - solar, ground source etc, originally planned to start in April 2011. Government Ministers are still debating how exactly funding will be paid to homeowners etc. and how early adopters will also be able to claim (if at all).

There have been some 10,000 entrants since the scheme started in April, the sheer numbers, whilst very encouraging for renewable targets, does present a problem for the Government in how to continue funding the tariffs whilst faced with the extreme cuts to current expenditure levels. Many other european countries that started their own tariff's before the UK have already announced or made their own reductions, which has resulted in the number of entrants slowing.

Greater interest in Solar Panels

Boost Your Energy Efficiency Rating

Since July 2008, to put a house on the market you’ve had to arrange for a Home Information Pack (HIP), containing assorted details about the house, it’s construction, boundary details and planning permission. From April of this year, the HIP must be ready and available by the first day your property goes on the market.

Contained in the HIP is an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), which potential buyers can use to assess your home’s energy efficiency. Today, we’re giving you some excellent tips on how to give your EPC an adrenalin shot and boost your home’s energy efficiency, and so boost its value.

Even if you aren’t selling your home, improving your home’s energy efficiency makes sense: by combining these tips you could reduce your energy bill by over £300 a year!

Fit or Replace Your Double Glazing.

The Government have downgraded the energy rating of all Pre-2002 double glazing to ‘Average’, whilst the newer units can attain a ‘Good’ or even ‘Excellent’ rating. If your double glazing is starting to get past its best you can increase your home’s overall rating by replacing it with modern energy-efficient units. Making sure your double glazing is up to scratch will also help reduce draughts and noise, making your home a quieter, more peaceful place.

EPC certificates also look at your boiler and heating control system. Insulation: Are You Eligible for a Government Grant?

When preparing for the winter, it's a good idea to think about insulating your house, in particular the roof and the walls. One thing that's definitely worth checking is whether you are able to claim a government grant to cover the costs of insulating.

Through a number of regional schemes, the UK government will pay nearly £3000 towards insulation work. In England, this is called Warm Front, in Wales it's the Home Energy Effieciency Scheme (HEES), in Scotland, Warm Deal, and in Northern Ireland the Warm Homes Grant.

You could be eligible if you are a homeowner or private landlord and:


  • You are over 60 and in receipt of one or more benefits

  • You have a child under 16 or are pregnant and on benefits such as Income Support or Council Tax Benefit

  • You have an income of under £15,460 and claim Tax Credits, Disability Living Allowance or other benefits.

Eco-homes - go green and save money
It seems that not a day goes by without some mention of climate change. We all know we should be taking steps to reduce our carbon footprint, but with today's hectic lifestyles, it's hard to know where to start.

But as energy bills, fuel prices and the cost of groceries all continue to rise, there's now an added incentive for making our homes more eco-friendly. Here we show you how you can make small changes that will not just make you feel like you're doing your bit for the environment, but can also save you some serious money!

Lighting and Heating
One of the easiest ways to save a bit of energy is to invest in some energy-saving lightbulbs. They've had bad press in the past, as they used to be bulky, ugly and not as bright as ordinary bulbs, but technology has moved on, and they are now available in a range of shapes, colours and sizes. While the bulbs are more expensive in the first place, they last up to 10 times longer than ordinary bulbs, and use up to four times less electricity, so you will quickly make back your money and start saving.

On top of this, it's amazing how much energy you can save just by turning unnecessary lights off. It's worthwhile getting into the habit of switching the lights off when you leave a room - just by switching off one bulb for an hour every day, you'll save enough energy to power a month's worth of telly watching! With the lighting in most homes accounting for 10 to 15 per cent of the electricity bill, this one simple tip could save you up to £25 a year.

There are also several things you can do to save on your heating bills. Consider replacing you boiler with a condensing boiler. Again, this might seem costly upfront, but according to the National Energy Foundation, you would recoup these costs in three to four years. Alternatively, you could insulate your existing boiler for significant energy savings - if we all lagged our hot water cylinders with an insulated jacket, we would save enough CO2 to fill over 4.2million double decker buses! If you have electric-powered heaters, another idea is to fit each heater with its own timer, so that you can heat different rooms at different times, according to use. And if all that sounds too much like hard work, even just turning the thermostat down by just 1°C can cut as much as 10 per cent off your heating bills!

Insulation and Glazing
Now that you've saved money on warming your house, the last thing you want is for all your efforts to go to waste - around half of heat loss in a typical home is through the walls and loft, so it's worth checking whether yours are insulated. If your house was built between 1920 and 1980, chances are yours is one of the eight million homes in the UK that could benefit from cavity-wall insulation. It takes less than a day to install, with minimum mess and disruption, and could save you around £150 on fuel bills, which would make up for the original cost in three to five years. Insulating your loft is even more straight-forward, as it's a job that can be done by a novice DIY-er. Insulation materials can be bought from any DIY store relatively inexpensively, and if you were to put down 250mm of insulation in an empty loft, you'd save £70 to £270 a year.

We couldn't talk about saving energy without mentioning double glazing! However, it can be expensive, especially if you live in a period property and want to retain the original look of the windows. Before shunning the idea though, it is worth bearing in mind that double-glazing should cut heat loss from your home by 50 per cent, and could save you almost £100 a year in heating bills. It is also something that homebuyers often look for, so is a great way to maximise your home's value.

There are several little things you can do to save energy when it comes to heating your home. 20 per cent of heat loss in a typical home is through ventilation and drafts, so invest in brush or PVC seals on the bottom of exterior doors, and perhaps a few draught excluders for other doors around the house. Make the most of natural light by keeping the curtains open while the sun still shines, but as soon as dusk falls be sure to draw the curtains to stop heat being lost through the windows. Also, try to make sure you don't drape curtains over radiators, as this will funnel heat straight out of the windows.

Ways with Water
A good way to save water is to switch to a water metre. Knowing that you’re paying for what you use should make you more mindful of how much water you waste. Your water company will fit one for free and it could save you as much as £200 a year. You could also make the best possible use of the delightful British weather and try your hand at water harvesting. At its simplest level this could just be one or two water butts. They're widely available from DIY stores and garden centres and cost about £30. Simply connect one to a down pipe and use the collected rain to water the garden.

Using rainwater indoors is tricky, but rainwater-harvesting systems are becoming popular. They work by collecting the rain that falls on the roof and putting it to use inside the home. Harvested rainwater can be used for everything except drinking and can reduce your household's mains water consumption by a huge 50 per cent. However, bear in mind that the systems on the market are expensive, so with this tip it would take you quite a while to recoup the initial outlay.

There are several handy gadgets on the market to help you waste less water. You can obtain a cistern displacement device free of charge from your water company. You simply fill it up and pop it in the cistern of your toilet, saving you three litres every time you flush! Also, wherever possible, take a shower instead of a bath - depending on the time it takes you to shower it can use as little as a fifth of the hot water. Even then, showers can use anywhere between six and 45 litres per minute, but by fitting a water efficient shower head you can save water and money.

Household Appliances
Now, we're not going to suggest you rush out and replace all your kitchen appliances with those that are more energy efficient! However, the next time you change or upgrade any of your appliances, keep an eye out for products with an Energy Saving Recommended label, as these can be 20 per cent most efficient. Also, fridges, freezers and washing machines all bare an EU energy label which rates the energy efficiency of the appliance on a scale from A to G, with A being the most energy efficient and G being the least.

In the meantime, there are simple steps you can take to start using your current appliances more efficiently. For example, washing clothes at 30 degrees saves energy. Instead of using your washing machine and dishwasher every day, wait until you have a full load - a half load setting uses more than half the energy and water. Fridges and freezers run more efficiently if they are defrosted regularly, and you should also remove dust from the element at the back on a regular basis. Avoid putting food that's still warm into the fridge as it then has to work harder to keep the temperature down, and it's a good idea to make sure the doors are held open as little as possible too.

Even just remembering not to leave appliances on standby can save the average household £37 a year! Electronic goods use 10-60 per cent as much energy when they are on standby as they do when they are in use. To turn off an appliance completely, use the power switch on the appliance itself or turn it off at the plug. Alternatively, for around £30 you can buy a device that will stop your appliances drawing electricity when in standby mode, which will save electricity and increase the life of the appliance by up to 15 per cent. Appliances with a charger, like mobile phones, or an external power pack, such as laptops, will still use power unless turned off at the plug. Many appliances have an LED which lights up when they are on standby. However, some don't, so it is less obvious that they are constantly sat there wasting energy. For example, do you switch your washing machine off at the wall when it's not in use?

Small changes, big savings!
There are lots of little changes you can make around the house that will cost you nothing. In the kitchen, when you're cooking on the hob make sure you match the pan size to the size of the hotplate to avoid wasted energy. Also use a lid on your pan, as this dramatically cuts the energy used. If you have a microwave, always use this to heat small quantities of food as this is much more energy efficient. Kettles are a huge energy guzzler, so make sure you only fill yours with as much water as you need, otherwise you're just heating it up to let it cool back down again. If you have an extractor fan in your kitchen, or indeed in your bathroom, turn it off as soon as it has done its job, otherwise it is simply sucking warm air out of the house.

Drying clothes on the washing line instead of in the tumble drier is an obvious way to save electricity. On rainy days, make sure you separate your load before putting it in the tumble drier – always dry heavier items like towels and jeans on their own. If you have a wood-burning stove, it is worthwhile collecting fallen branches from your garden, or when out for a walk, and using these as kindling. Try to recycle as much of your household waste as possible. By this we don't just mean making the most of your local recycling facilities. For example, a plastic milk bottle with the bottom cut off makes an excellent scoop for dry cat or dog food. Or perhaps use empty wine bottles as candle holders for that restaurant feel! Also, yoghurt pots and empty boxes can be used to store all kinds of things.

So whether you're keen to do your bit for the environment, or you just want to save some cash, there are plenty of things you can do to make your house an eco-home!

Turn your house into an Eco-home

Just how easy is it to turn your house into an eco-home?

The recent hype surrounding climate change should have made us realise that we each need to do something to encourage “greener living”. Whatever we do, it can range from a massive lifestyle change, such as changing our home energy source, to a small one, like recycling our rubbish. And in some cases, you can get government grants to help you pay for it!

Here, Mark Cooper, Managing Director of Homeimprovementquotes.co.uk, explains how simple it can be to become eco-friendly and reduce that all- important carbon footprint.

In his latest government policy Gordon Brown stressed that “we have a compelling and ever-more-urgent duty of stewardship to take care of the natural environment and resources”, and there are loads of incentives for “going green” - not just the obvious one of saving the planet!

Start from the outside and work your way in
By far the best way to reduce carbon emissions from your home is to insulate it. Good quality insulation can significantly reduce your energy wastage, saving not only the o-zone layer, but also your cash! Loft insulation alone can cut your energy bills by 20 per cent. Add to that cavity wall insulation, underfloor heating and draught-proofing and your energy bill could be halved!

There is no need to worry about the cost either. New government initiatives will pay 30 to 70 per cent of the cost of insulation – up to a maximum of £2700 – as part of their bill to save energy. This could rise to 100 per cent for homes which currently have no insulation whatsoever.

Don’t think getting insulation is a massive upheaval. It can be done on a room-by-room basis as and when you are decorating, and the quickest installation takes just two hours per wall – the more complex systems take only two weeks in their entirety. In all honesty it will probably take you longer to choose the type of insulation you require than it will to install it!

There are loads available:
Thermal insulation: Made from 90 per cent recycled materials, this is eco-friendly from the start – all the packaging is also recyclable, so there are no excuses for wasting anything! Thermal insulation is extremely effective and is quick and easy to install – just two hours per wall.
Thermafleece: Made from sheep’s wool, this insulation is completely breathable and absorbs moisture, controlling condensation. It’s attached using a timber framework and installation is very quick. Thermafleece uses just 14 per cent energy in manufacture compared to other brands and pays for itself seven times faster.
Recycled newspaper insulation: This is sprayed into place, meaning cavities are completely filled to give maximum insulation. The lack of framework means no measuring up, fast installation and lower costs.
Multi-foil insulation: This is bought in rolls from DIY stores, so you can install it yourself. It is only 30 millimetres thick, but is as effective as 230 and of other insulators.
Expanded polystyrene insulation: Especially for underfloor heating, this is installed underneath and around the concrete slab which contains the heating system – the concrete then acts as a storage heater.

Most types of insulation can be used in lofts or walls and you can mix and match depending on the requirements of each room. It is well worth doing – every square metre of wall insulation saves more than a tonne of carbon dioxide over the life of the building. An average semi has an area of eighty metres squared, so that’s a saving of 80 tonnes or more of carbon emissions.

You don’t need permanent sunshine to use solar power
It may not seem like it now, but the sun is still out there somewhere! Its rays are strong enough to power your home – even through cloud – and you don’t need to install a giant panel on the roof either. A small panel lying totally flat to the roof is sufficient for the average family and can save 50 to 60 per cent of your energy bills. The panel collects sunlight into a metal absorber plate and converts this to energy for your heating or water system. The government estimates that installing systems like these costs between £3000 and £4500, but will pay a grant up to £400 towards the installation costs. This may not seem like much, but the savings on bills means it will pay for itself in roughly eight years. Our own monthly poll shows that 80 per cent of people would be willing to install solar panels in their homes – go for it!

Little things go a long long way
On a smaller scale, there’s loads you can do to save energy. One way is by getting a controller for your central heating system so that you only heat the rooms you need to. This could be through a programmer or individual radiator control valves. Another way to reduce waste is to switch to energy-saving light bulbs. They use a lower wattage to emit the same amount of light and although more expensive than regular bulbs – around £2 each – they last roughly 8000 hours, saving an estimated £35 a year.

If you’re on a water meter it’s easy to recycle your rainwater and it can save you 50 per cent on your bills. Rainwater is collected in a barrel and diverted to dedicated flow points – such as the laundry or toilet – providing up to 84 per cent of your supply. There are no current government grants for rainwater harvesting, but in terms of savings it’s worth looking into. Also try to always do a full load of laundry and lower to a 40 degree wash – with today’s washing powders there’s no need to use a hot wash all of the time. Never leave appliances on standby, regularly defrost your freezer so it runs to its full potential and try turning your heating down by one degree – chances are you won’t even notice, but it will save you £10 a year!

Recycle – it really does make a difference
A massive 60 per cent of the rubbish you throw away can be recycled! Just in case you think it doesn’t matter, remember – one recycled drinks can save enough energy to power your TV for three hours, a glass bottle enough to power your PC for 25 minutes and a plastic bottle enough to power a 60 watt bulb for three hours. It takes 70 per cent less energy to make recycled paper than to make it from scratch, and saves 24 trees. Plastic takes just six weeks to recycle, but if thrown away takes 500 years to decompose – thrown away glass will never decompose, but is 100 per cent recyclable. Currently only two percent of the UK’s electricity is supplied using renewable energy resources. By 2010 the government hopes this will rise to ten per cent and by 2050, to 50 per cent - you can help them reach this target and save yourself some money in the process!

We all probably think we know the arguments for double glazing – but do we? Glazing and window technology has moved on, there are green issues to take into account and security issues to consider. Here are five great reasons to replace your windows with double glazing – a low cost investment with many benefits:

1 – Energy savings mean money for being green
